Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions — like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements — and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team’s announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft’s recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we’ve not seen any new benchmarks yet, we’re curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you’re running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you’re seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

4G LTE networks hit battery life on some smartphones

While battery capacities in smartphones has increased, 4G LTE networks are taking their toll on battery life for Web browsing and video streaming, according to a new analysis by Metrico Wireless. Four new smartphones tested 20,000 times on live AT&T and Verizon Wireless LTE networks all delivered less than five hours of battery life for either streaming video or Web browsing, testing service Metrico said in a 10-page report released today.

There’s a Supermoon Rising on Saturday

It may have been a “bad moon” rising in the famous 1969 song by CCR, but this weekend’s full moon could well inspire predictions for trouble of a similar kind. That’s because it’s this year’s “supermoon” — the full moon that occurs when the moon is closest to Earth — and supermoons are often believed to wreak even more havoc on our planet than ordinary full moons do.

Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

We saw a lot of things back at CES, and from the PC makers, it was mainly new Ultrabooks. Samsung, however, did present a pair of “regular” notebooks, and it looks like they’re just about to stretch their legs in the UK. The Series 5 550P is available in 15- and 17-inch varieties, sporting 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900 displays respectively. Calling the shots will be quad-core Ivy Bridge Core i7 chips supported by 8GB of RAM. Graphics are dished up by a 2GB GeForce GT 650M, and there’s a Blu-ray optical drive plus capacity for up to 2TB of storage. Like the Series 7, sound is handled by integrated JBL speakers complete with “Max Bass Boost” subwoofer — crikey! Lower specification models will also be available (swapping the Blu-ray for DVD, and using shared graphics) when they hit UK stores this month.

Editorial: Engadget on the Samsung Galaxy S III

Editorial: Engadget on the Samsung Galaxy S III

Was it everything you imagined? The Galaxy S III didn’t really slap us silly with hardware spectacle or a particularly brave design and instead plowed into software additions and contextual features. There was plenty to chew over and plenty of discussion followed its big reveal, spilling out over the last few days — this was a big launch for not only Samsung but Android itself. We’ve got the six editors who spent time with the device to offer up their own thoughts on this new Android Olympian.

Breville Compact Juice Fountain Review: Fast. Efficient. Delicious. [Review]

Is it the bacon backlash? Juicing, once reserved for Jack LaLanne devotees and hippie health nuts, is suddenly de rigueur. But for all of the nutritional benefits that fresh juice promises to deliver, home juicers have never been worth the investment. The usual suspects are high-priced, hard to clean and hog up kitchen counter space. More »
